GENERAL INFORMATION

The primary function of the Parks and Recreation Department is to meet the leisure needs of the residents of the City of Manchester. The department strives to offer quality recreation programs and special events to enhance the quality of life for city residents as well as others residing in western St. Louis County.

The City of Manchester owns seven parks encompassing approximately 63 acres. The largest is Paul A. Schroeder Park, with a land area of 44 acres. Facilities at this park include the park office, municipal pool, playground, tennis courts, ball diamonds, walking paths, and picnic pavilions. The city's other four parks offer pavilions, picnic sites, and playgrounds.

The Parks and Recreation Department sponsors a number of community events, including Manchester Homecoming, Halloween Spooktacular, and Santa's Breakfast. These events have grown in popularity over the years, and an active and enthusiastic volunteer corps supplements city resources in making these events successful.

The Parks and Recreation Department also operates the Manchester Aquatic Center. The department offers a wide variety of programmatic activities at the facility, including swimming lessons, exercise classes, swim meets, and special family events.

The Manchester Aquatic Center is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Its hours of operation are 12:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The facility is open from 11:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. On occasion, the Aquatic Center will close early due to inclement weather, or swim/dive meets. Any deviation from normal operating hours will be posted in the facility's lobby.

Community Wide Trail System

The trail project was begun as the result of a 2002 survey of residents, which indicated great interest in a trail system for the City of Manchester. In 2005, the Cities of Manchester and Ballwin hired Jim Pona and Associates to develop a joint trail system. Public hearings were held in Ballwin and Manchester in 2006 to discuss the proposed trail plan in more detail. Click here for the Preliminary Draft Plan.
